The Strait tunnel: what is real and what is not
The project exists, has been studied for decades and has received renewed technical work. But it remains in the research and preliminary-design update phase.
STUDY PHASE
Spain and Morocco maintain an active study programme. Tunnel construction has not started and there is no official opening date.
Campaigns to reduce uncertainty
The SECEGSA–CSIC agreement published in late 2025 funds 2025–2026 work to investigate the seabed and improve the 3D geological model, with IGME, IEO, ICM, IHM and USGS participation.
- Bathymetry and geomorphology.
- Nature of shallow geological formations.
- Campaign design and execution around the Camarinal Sill.
- Physical-environment data management system.
No construction timetable
There is no construction award, official start date or opening date. Cost or inauguration estimates outside official sources should be treated as hypotheses.
Bilateral cooperation
Spain y Morocco establecen el marco científico y técnico.
Tunnel solution
An excavated rail link is prioritised over bridge alternatives.
Update
Public funding restarts preliminary-design review and research.
Marine campaigns
New work to improve the seabed geological model.
Decision pending
Any construction would require further assessment, funding, permits and agreements.
